Explicit dynamics

High-rate structural behaviour, resolved through time.

Explicit solvers are well suited to short-duration events involving rapidly changing contact, large deformation, complex load paths and material failure.

When the sequence of events matters, so does time.

Crash, impact, rollover and blast involve rapidly changing loads and structural response. Contact conditions change, structures rotate and deform, loads redistribute and components may fail. Explicit time integration is particularly well suited to simulating these complex events, capturing the progression of deformation and failure through time.

Our explicit dynamics analyses combine physically representative models, appropriate material and contact behaviour, and rigorous verification of the transient response.

Impact & Crash

Transient loading, evolving contact conditions and large deformation.

Rollover

Whole-vehicle motion and protective-structure response.

Blast & Shock

Short-duration loading, pressure-wave propagation and fluid–structure interaction where required.

Material Failure

Modelling ductile fracture, brittle failure and progressive damage in composite materials.

Rollover example

The full event tells the engineering story.

A rollover simulation can capture vehicle motion, ground contact, structural deformation and load transfer into the protective structure throughout the event. The animation is only the visible part: the engineering assessment comes from interrogating forces, deformation, energies and the response against defined criteria.

Attention to detail

Numerical stability matters as much as visual realism.

A credible explicit model requires attention to both the physical assumptions and the numerical behaviour throughout the event.

Time step & efficiency

Model detail and element quality are balanced against stable transient solution requirements.

Contact behaviour

Interfaces, gaps, friction and separation are checked against the expected physical interaction.

Energy balance

Kinetic, internal, contact and non-physical energy terms help diagnose whether the solution is behaving credibly.

Failure criteria

Material failure and structural acceptance criteria are selected and interpreted in the context of the engineering requirement.
